Households on Spain's regulated PVPC tariff will pay an average of €0.253 per kWh on Wednesday 4 November, Red Eléctrica says. The lowest rate comes from 14:00 to 15:00, at €0.162 per kWh.

Prices peak from 18:00 to 19:00, at €0.386 per kWh. The rate then stays high from 19:00 to 20:00 at €0.384. It is €0.370 from 20:00 to 21:00.

The cheapest times to use power

The next cheapest hour is 15:00 to 16:00, when the rate is €0.171 per kWh. The period from 03:00 to 04:00 follows at €0.176.

For a simple example, a washing machine that uses 2 kWh would cost about €0.32 in the cheapest hour. The same amount of power would cost about €0.77 in the dearest hour. Both figures are before tax, and the gap is €0.45.

The overnight average, from midnight to 08:00, is €0.205 per kWh. It rises to €0.251 from 08:00 to 14:00 and €0.273 from 14:00 to 20:00. The evening average from 20:00 to midnight is the highest, at €0.324.

Wednesday's daily average is 2.5 cents above the previous day's €0.228. It is also 3.0 cents higher than the €0.223 recorded one week earlier.

Who pays the PVPC rate

These figures apply to homes on the regulated PVPC tariff. They cover the power used before VAT and electricity tax. Bills also include a fixed charge based on the amount of power a home has contracted.

People with a fixed-price contract pay the rate agreed with their supplier, not the hourly PVPC prices.
