Andalusia’s regional government will mark Flamenco Day on 16 November with more than a hundred events across the region’s eight provinces, bringing together more than 280 artists and professionals. The programme also marks 16 years since UNESCO recognised flamenco as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the 75th anniversary of singer Camarón de la Isla’s birth.

Performances across the region

A cycle organised with the Andalusian Confederation of Flamenco Clubs will stage 16 performances, two in each province, around 16 November and again around 5 December. The clubs will hold a further 58 performances for the occasion.

Eight simultaneous performances are planned for the morning of 15 November in venues linked to contemporary art and visual culture across the provincial capitals. The programme also includes four university performances between 9 and 19 November, while a young artists’ gala is scheduled for Madrid on 6 November.

The Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía will present ‘Flamenco Patrimonio’ at Málaga’s Teatro Cánovas on 4 and 5 December, with further performances planned in Alicante, Cádiz and Córdoba. Education and outreach events include the Flamenco en el Aula awards in Seville and an immersive experience for more than 800 schoolchildren in Linares.

A cultural industry and shared responsibility

Regional culture minister Patricia del Pozo said flamenco was an artistic expression that Andalusians had a right and responsibility to know, defend and preserve. She also described it as one of the region’s cultural industries, able to reinvent itself and blend with other forms of expression.
